SP Innovation Summit 2024

Event Details

The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) Innovation Summit is designed as an interactive event focused on building understanding of critical barriers impacting the sustainability of the automotive value chain and working towards practical solutions to accelerate innovation in support of industry sustainability priorities.

SP's vehicle manufacturer and tiered supplier members are leading action on the next generation of ambitious environmental sustainability goals aspiring to advance positive environmental, economic and community impacts through their operations and value chains. The Summit agenda will focus in on new innovation and emerging trends related to industry sustainability goals, within key areas such as carbon neutrality, circular and sustainable materials, EV battery lifecycle management, and nature and water stewardship.

Sustainability Manager at Toyota Motor North America

Kevin Butt is the Regional Environmental Sustainability director of Toyota’s North American Environmental Sustainability Programs. He is responsible for the development of Environmental Sustainability Programs and Regulatory/Legislative development for all of Toyota’s North American operations.

Prior to Butt’s current assignment, he was the general manager/chief environmental and safety officer for Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing for all of Toyota’s Manufacturing operations. Prior to that assignment, Butt served as the assistant general manager of Body Production Engineering for Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc., (TMMNA). He was responsible for Body Engineering for all Toyota’s North American manufacturing operations. Body Engineering consists of Welding, Stamping, and Painting Operations.

Butt serves on several boards including the National Wildlife Habitat Council, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Foundation, World Wildlife Fund National Council, North American Great Plains Advisory Board and the Yellowstone Park Foundation Board.

He has a Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Science from Georgetown College.

Joel Agner is an Environmental Engineer with the Triple Zero team at Honda Development & Manufacturing of America (HDMA). In this role, Joel researches, identifies, and implements technologies that help Honda achieve its 2050 goal for carbon neutrality, resource circulation, and clean energy.

Prior to this, Joel was a Test Engineer in Honda Powersports conducting engine calibration of prototype ATVs and Side-by-Sides. That included emissions compliance, drivability, and real-world testing around the globe. Before that, Joel worked in Honda R&D Fabrication focused on auto prototype vehicles.

Joel started his career in mobility as an auto mechanic with a passion for the environment. After joining Honda, he utilized waste vegetable oil to power his commute to work. His next environmental project focused on capturing carbon emissions off of a test dyno to produce and research algae, before turning his attention to the Honda Power of Dreams Forest.

Alan Amici is a seasoned automotive leader with over 35 years of experience. Currently, he serves as the President and CEO of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR). Prior to joining CAR, Amici held various leadership positions in engineering, manufacturing, and service at Chrysler and TE Connectivity. At TE, he held leadership positions like Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Transportation Solutions and Vice President of Engineering for Automotive Americas. During his extensive tenure at Chrysler, Amici spearheaded crucial initiatives such as Global Uconnect (infotainment and connected car platform) and electrical/electronics engineering for their facilities in both Italy and Michigan. He also held a senior management position within their global service and parts department in Germany. Amici's expertise is further recognized by his two patents and the prestigious Walter P. Chrysler Technology Award. His academic background is equally impressive, boasting an MBA, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, all from the University of Michigan. He actively contributes to the academic world by serving on the Board of Advisors at Penn State Harrisburg and the Department of Industrial Engineering at Wayne State University. Amici is also a graduate of the Chrysler Institute of Engineering.

Martha Amram is the CEO of GLYNT.AI, The Sustainability Data Company. GLYNT prepares financial-grade water, waste, energy and emissions data for sustainability and finance teams around the globe.

Martha is the author of five books on corporate strategy, finance and valuation (published by HBS Press and McGraw-Hill; translated into five languages) and dozens of articles. With deep expertise in corporate strategy, finance and sustainability -- and their intersection -- Martha is a frequent speaker and panelist. She also holds four patents.

Previously Martha founded Glaze Creek Partners, which was sold to Navigant Consulting, where she worked with F1000 companies on product innovation strategy. She has also been Chief Economist at PLX Systems, where she worked on patent valuation and a Vice President at Analysis Group, where she led teams that prepared expert testimony on financial derivatives and corporate valuation.

Martha holds a Ph.D in Applied Economics from MIT Sloan. She is a member of the MIT Sloan Visiting Committee and the MIT Sloan Executive Board.

Nandwa Awori is a Corporate Planning Specialist at Toyota Tsusho America, Inc., where she leverages her expertise in sustainability to drive impactful change. With a background in Sustainable Urban Environments from New York University, Nandwa has dedicated nearly two years to advancing environmental stewardship within the corporate sector.
At Toyota Tsusho, Nandwa plays a pivotal role in collecting and auditing greenhouse gas emissions data, essential for the company's commitment to carbon neutrality. Her focus extends to developing strategies that effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and promoting ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives company-wide.
Nandwa Awori is passionate about catalyzing attitudes towards sustainability and climate action within business operations, aiming to integrate sustainable practices at every level of Toyota Tsusho's corporate strategy.

Alyssa Barbuto is the Environmental Sustainability Lead within the Purchasing Supply Chain Center at Honda Development and Manufacturing of America, LLC with over a year of experience in the automotive sector, and over 2 years of experience within the oil and gas sector. Specializing in supply chain sustainability, Alyssa uses her experience to ensure that suppliers disclose and reduce carbon emissions, engage in renewable energy programs, and remain in compliance with chemical substances. She strives for corporations to place sustainability at the forefront of all decisions. Alyssa is a graduate of The Ohio State University, studying Environment, Economy, Development, and Sustainability. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Sustainability Leadership at Arizona State University.

Mohamed Bouguettaya is currently a sustainability Manager for BASF performance materials in North America. In his role supporting the engineering plastics business, he is responsible for coordinating corporate sustainability initiatives and cross division activities dealing with Circular Economy and carbon management topics. Prior to his current role, Mohamed held positions in Strategic Marketing and R&D. Mohamed holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of la Sorbonne /Paris XIII in France.

During his career Mohamed has been representing BASF at a variety of government led consortiums and trade associations. He has been a member of the technical advisory board at composites institute (IACMI), Chair of the sustainability committee at the Center of Polyurethanes industry (CPI), member of the Technical advisory board at the BOTTLE institute, member of the governance board of the REMADE institute and recently is co-chairing the Materials working group at the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment.

Kenneth K. Boyer is Fisher designated professor of operations and business analytics at Fisher COB, Ohio State University. He was the co–editor in chief of the Journal of Operations Management from 2006 to 2011. Previously Ken was a Full Professor at Broad, Michigan State University as well as on the faculty at DePaul University. He earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Brown University and a Ph.D. in business administration from Ohio State University. His research interests focus on healthcare operations for sustainability in supply chains, patient safety, strategic management of operations and the eﬀective management of emerging technologies. He is author of the book The Electric Vehicle Revolution: Five Visionaries Leading the Charge (Rowman & Littlefield).

Martin Chilcott is an environmental and digital entrepreneur whose focus for over 20 years has been on disruptive business models that catalyse systemic change. Having built a successful internet consultancy in the late 1990s, Martin was convinced that web technologies would play a major role in accelerating the inevitable sustainability revolution. Martin’s next venture was 2degrees, which pioneered new ways to spread sustainability practices across global supply chains. Armed with the knowledge from 12 successful years at 2degrees, Martin and his team then launched Manufacture 2030 in 2017, which is now driving progress toward decarbonisation targets with thousands of suppliers in 70+ countries. In 2022, Manufacture 2030 was selected as one of the World Economic Forum’s “Technology Pioneers“, named a Gartner® Cool Vendor in the 2022 Cool Vendors™ in Supply Chain Management Technology report, and selected in the ProcureTech100 for the second year running.

Dr. Michael Faltenbacher joined Sphera (formerly thinkstep) in 2006 and is responsible for the transport and mobility sector as team leader. With more than 20 years of experience in the field of life cycle analysis of transport and energy systems, he has extensive know-how on automotive sector covering the transport of passengers and goods using conventional and alternative fuel and drive systems. His work focuses on the technical, ecological and economic comparison of fuel and propulsion technologies for light and heavy duty vehicles.

One example of his work and expertise is the development of a life cycle based evaluation approach for battery electric vehicles as well as hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicles. This approach has been refined over the past 15 years and is currently used in a range of public funded lighthouse projects such as the European Commission’s co-funded H2Haul and JIVE/JIVE 2 project on the deployment of FC electric heavy duty trucks respectively buses. In these projects Sphera is the responsible for the life cycle based environmental and economic evaluation of the deployed ZEV vehicles and energy supply infrastructure.

Rebecca (Becky) Hensley is a Senior Manager Sustainability at CSX Transportation, Inc where she coordinates sustainability initiatives and corporate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting. Becky has worked for CSX for over 12 years and has over 25 years of experience with environmental, sustainability and regulatory compliance. She has specialized her career in data management solutions and cross-functional team collaboration. Before joining CSX, she worked as a consultant for a variety of transportation, manufacturing, military, and government clients. Her career has specialized in environmental permitting and development of customized data solutions for air, water and waste compliance.

She holds a BS in Environmental Engineering from the University of Florida and currently lives in Jacksonville, FL.

Matt oversees The Water Council’s stewardship initiatives including WAVE: Water Stewardship Verified, water stewardship advisory services and comprehensive professional water stewardship training. Previously, TWC helped establish the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) System globally with specific oversight of North America. Matt created the world’s first professional credentialing program for water stewardship professionals and made the business case for use of the International Water Stewardship Standard (“AWS Standard”) in the North American marketplace. His 15+ years in sustainability program development and management include serving as Milwaukee’s sustainability director and leading sustainable manufacturing initiatives during his time in Washington, D.C., where he worked at the U.S. Department of Commerce and as a staffer in the U.S. House of Representatives. He has an MA from George Washington University and a BA from Valparaiso University. He is AWS and Lean Six Sigma accredited and serves on the WELL Water Advisory and the Wisconsin Governor’s Wetlands Study Council. He served on the U.S. EPA’s National Advisory Council on Environmental Policy and Technology from 2014-2019.

Rajiv Jalim is Global Head of Performance Sustainability at FigBytes, part of the AMCS Group. In this role, he helps companies discover strategies and tech solutions to achieve their ESG and sustainability goals.
Rajiv has over a decade of experience in sustainability consulting, strategy and program management and has worked with clients in sectors including biotechnology, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, and healthcare.
His superpower is a remarkable aptitude for building strong and productive relationships with stakeholders, clients, and teammates. Rajiv has helped dozens of clients deliver impact in the areas of ESG & sustainability strategy and programming, climate action and sustainability advocacy.

Becky is a Sustainability Manager at Toyota Motor North America leading projects in renewable energy, biodiversity and environmental justice. In her first role at Toyota, she led the Green Mobility team and helped underserved populations have better access to jobs, nutrition and healthcare. Prior to Toyota, she worked at Burt's Bees, GameStop, Citigroup and several nonprofits in sustainability, international development, IT and finance. She has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill and an MBA and Masters of Science in Natural Resources and Environment from the University of Michigan. In her free time, she volunteers with the Santa Monica Bay Foundation helping to restore native habitats coastal habitats in Los Angeles.

Ryan Melsert brings twenty years of multidisciplinary expertise to his positions as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the American Battery Technology Company (ABTC). Since becoming ABTC’s CEO, he has accelerated the company’s transition to commercialization leading efforts to fully reconstitute the company’s independent Board of Directors, strategically realign and integrate the companies’ three business units, restructured financial, accounting and cost control practices, establish a new Reno-based headquarters, engage top-level strategic partners, and acquire top talent.
Melsert previously served as R&D Manager for Tesla’s Gigafactory Battery Materials Processing group. He founded and led a cross-functional team of mechanical and chemical engineers who implemented first principles design to develop novel first-of-kind systems for the extraction, purification, and synthesis of precursor and active battery materials. This development scope included the fundamental conceptual design, rigorous thermodynamic and process modeling, design and fabrication of bench-scale prototypes, construction and operation of integrated pilot systems, and implementation of commercial scale systems for the processing of battery materials.
Other roles include R&D Manager (Advanced Energy & Transportation Technologies) for Southern Research and Energy Systems Consultant for the Advanced Technology Development Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He has a variety of publications and patents in his name and has served as the Principal Investigator for several US DOE supported renewable energy projects, including 4 grants while at ABTC. Melsert has also won innovation competitions, including the BASF Circularity Challenge in 2019 hosted to identify the most promising lithium-ion battery recycling technologies in the world. He recently was invited to join President Joe Biden and U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm in awarding ABTC with a portion of the $2.8 billion in grants from the U.S. Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for projects to expand U.S. manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles and domestic mineral production.
Melsert was acknowledged as Waste360’s 40 under 40 Innovator of the Year 2022. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering science and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Penn State University, a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Master of Business (MBA) from the Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business.

Margaret O’Gorman has operated at the intersection of business and nature for over a decade as the president of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), where she supports corporate efforts to align nature-positive goals with ESG and EHS priorities. As the author of Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning (Island Press, 2019) she laid out a road map for the private sector to strategize, implement, measure and recognize its impacts on nature. O’Gorman was the lead designer of WHC’s signature Conservation Certification®, which recognizes corporate biodiversity efforts across the globe using an accessible approach that balances corporate ambition with operational pragmatism.
O’Gorman has consulted with Fortune 500 companies like General Motors, Exelon, Chevron, BASF, Enbridge and others to develop strategies and frameworks to integrate biodiversity into business. These nature-positive strategies have been deployed in companies and along supply chains in 28 countries connecting to larger corporate, social impact and climate goals.
As she leads WHC’s efforts to support companies seeking to align with frameworks and initiatives like TNFD, SBTN, GRI and others she also leads the World Environment Center, a sustainable business NGO focused on thought leadership and capacity building. These dual leadership roles are a precursor to an eventual organizational combination that will see the creation of a new organization focused on providing business value in the realms of water, nature, climate, and social impact.

Kevin leads the Sustainability team at Manufacture 2030 with responsibilities including guiding the strategy and roadmap for the company’s digital solution and operating a center of excellence for sustainability addressing internal and customer challenges.

With an earlier career in manufacturing and supply chain consulting at Accenture, Deloitte and KPMG, Kevin transitioned into sustainability in 2007 and since then has held a variety of senior positions focused on business digital solutions for product and supply chain sustainability, including Sustainability Director at SAP and leading a Product Footprinting team at the Carbon Trust in the UK.

Kevin was responsible for PCF reduction measurements for the world’s first ‘front of pack’ product carbon label in 2008.
In 2009 he led a technical working group for the development of the GHG Protocol Product Standard reporting chapter and in 2010 co-authored the GHG Protocol Scope 3 Guidance document, published by WRI and WBCSD.
Specialising in product footprinting and supply chain sustainability, Kevin has had the fortune to work on innovative digital footprinting solutions across many industry verticals and with organisations spanning the world’s biggest brands to farmers and cooperatives.
Kevin holds a Master of Science degree in Environmental Change and Management from Oxford University along with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Rui graduated from the University of Toronto with a PhD in chemistry and a specialization in advanced materials. He began his career with Bayer AG as a senior research chemist and went on to serve in numerous leadership roles in research and business development with Bayer MaterialScience and LANXESS. In 2007, Rui assumed the role of director of commercial development – chemistry and materials – at Queen’s University’s (Kingston, Canada) Technology Transfer Office, PARTEQ Innovations where he led the creation of GreenCentre Canada – the world’s first Green Chemistry commercialization centre. Following his tenure as GreenCentre’s Executive Director, Rui rejoined the chemical industry serving as Chief Operating Officer at Fielding Chemical Technologies where he oversaw solvent recycling operations only to be drawn back into the world of technology commercialization as the CEO of FireRein Inc. where he led the development and market introduction of PFAS free firefighting foams. Prior to assuming his current role as Director of Partnerships and Business Development at Change Chemistry, Rui spent 3 years in the biotech space with GlycoNet where he led partnership and business development activities in support of carbohydrate-based therapeutics development and commercialization.

Danielle is an experienced professional and currently serves as the Vice President of Communications & Public Affairs for Cirba Solutions overseeing communications, government affairs and community engagement. Having experience working with large iconic brands to challenger brands, she leads her team to creatively elevate a brand experience through amplifying communication and connection.

Spalding holds an MBA in International Business and believes that cross functional collaboration is foundational for enhancing a brand and organization. She is an accomplished professional passionate about customer experience and embracing digital technology. As a sustainability advocate, she focuses on providing solutions, education and thought leadership, as well as making a positive impact on the world.

Lauren Wilk is Vice President, Government Affairs & Sustainability at Arconic Corporation. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Penn., Arconic is a leading provider of aluminum sheet, plate, and extrusions that advance the automotive, aerospace, commercial transportation, industrial and building and construction markets. In her role, Lauren oversees the development and execution of Arconic’s sustainability strategy – including operational and supply chain decarbonization, compliance with environmental regulations, and progress toward the company’s 2030 sustainability targets. Lauren is also responsible for legislative and regulatory policy issues that affect the company’s operations and markets, and she oversees advocacy and engagement efforts with federal, state and local governments and other stakeholders in the countries where Arconic has a presence. Prior to joining Arconic Corporation, Lauren was most recently the Vice President, Government Relations and International Programs at the Aluminum Association. Previously, she was Director of Trade Policy at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) in Washington, D.C., and served as a Senior Legislative Assistant for U.S. Representative Donald Manzullo. She holds a B.S. in Journalism and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Kansas and a M.A. in National Security Studies from the Naval War College.

In his capacity as Sustainability Manager, Mark Yamauchi heads up strategic initiatives crossing inter and intradepartmental organizations that focus on sustainability and operational efficiencies.

He was responsible for Toyota’s first Solar Photovoltaic installation in 2002. At the time, the 536 kW system was the largest commercial rooftop system of its kind in the country.

Mark led the team that developed the 1 MW fuel cell which was the first of its kind and largest in the world at Toyota’s former Torrance, California HQ Campus.

He also led the sustainability design for Toyota’s new North American Headquarters in Plano, Texas which achieved triple LEED Platinum certification.

Mark is currently leading the Trigen fuel cell program at Toyota’s Long Beach, California port facility. Additionally, he heads Toyota’s North American efforts in water stewardship.

With over 30 years of experience in real estate and facilities and sustainability, and a LEED Accredited Professional since 2002, he has provided advice on sustainability to non-profits, corporations, and governments on the municipal, federal, and international level. Mark also sits on the Advisory Boards of the UCLA Engineering Extension Global Sustainability and Recycling and MSW Management Programs.
